What's Hot This Winter? July 1, 2025 15:33
As the temperatures drop and wardrobes turn to wool and layers, our hair follows suit—calling for richer colours, softer textures, and fresh silhouettes that suit the mood of the season. We spoke with salon owner and Schwarzkopf National Ambassador Jennifer Morgan to get her take on the standout cut and colour trends shaping winter 2025. From refined bobs to moody brunettes and the return of warm, wearable copper, here’s what to ask for at your next salon visit.
1. Luxe Brunette

Rich, glossy brunettes are centre stage this winter. Jennifer notes, "We’re seeing a shift toward deeper, more luxurious tones—think espresso, cinnamon, and smoky bronze—designed to enhance shine and flatter every skin tone." A gloss service or low-commitment toner is an easy way to revive faded colour and achieve that glassy, high-shine finish.
2. Soft Contour Cutting

While layers are still in, the trend is evolving. “Soft contour cutting is all about shape and flow—it’s designed to enhance your bone structure and create natural movement,” says Jennifer. Curtain fringes, tapered ends, and gentle layering are perfect for winter styling, especially for those embracing texture or air-dried finishes.
3. Warm Coppers and Cherry Cola

Copper isn’t going anywhere, but it’s being refined. “This winter, we’re seeing warm tones like burnt peach, marigold, and cherry cola—rich reds with brown undertones that make the colour last longer,” explains Jennifer. These shades bring brightness and warmth, particularly flattering during the cooler months.
4. The French-Inspired Bob

While bobs have remained popular, this season’s version takes its cues from classic French style. “It’s clean, rounded, and tailored to the jawline,” says Jennifer. “This shape looks polished but soft, and suits a wide range of face shapes.” For a modern take, try adding subtle texture or a deep side part for added movement.
5. Buttery Blonde and Amber Glaze

Blondes don’t have to go dark for winter. Jennifer suggests shifting to warmer tones: “We’re toning down the icy platinum and bringing in buttery, vanilla, and amber shades. They feel more natural and add softness to the overall look.” For blondes who want to stay light, a quick glaze can transform the tone and revive dull ends.
6. The Textured Bixie and Modern Shag

For those wanting something a little more fashion-forward, the bixie cut—part bob, part pixie—is having a moment, especially when styled with a hint of ‘90s grunge. “It’s fun, edgy, and surprisingly versatile,” Jennifer says. Similarly, modern shags with choppy layers and lived-in fringe continue to be a go-to for effortless style and volume.
7. Mushroom Brown

Cool-toned brunettes are trending this season, with mushroom brown offering a perfect balance between warm and ash tones. “It’s ideal for those who want a softer, more muted brunette,” says Jennifer. “It works really well as a transitional shade if you're moving away from blonde but not ready to go deep chocolate.”
8. Calico Colour

One of the more playful trends this season is the rise of “calico hair”—a blend of three distinct shades, like copper, caramel, and blonde. “It’s bold but beautiful when done well,” says Jennifer. “You’ll want to work with your stylist to choose a palette that complements your skin tone and features. It’s a great choice for clients who love creative colour without going neon.”
9. Refined Colour Blocking

For those who want a modern look but where Calico Colour might be just a wee bit too 'on-trend', Colour blocking is still around, but it’s become more sophisticated. “Instead of loud contrast, we’re seeing elegant placement—like auburn panels through brunette hair or honey tones framing the face on darker blondes,” Jennifer explains. “It’s about adding interest in a way that still feels wearable and refined.”
