For beauty junkies, oils have long been a must-have and now they’re moving into the mainstream. Facial oils are rising in popularity as an essential tool to combat dry skin, signs of ageing, enlarged pores, scarring, and even acne. And the magic doesn’t stop there – cosmetics manufacturers are now incorporating oils into make-up formulas, from primers to
oil-based blushes and lip products. Look for rosy tints that glide on effortlessly and adapt to your skintone.

Dewy, fresh bases with sculpted features reigned supreme on the international catwalks and the word ‘glowing’ was used in every review. The key to this is non-touring – the lightweight version of contouring, as MAC make-up director Lyne Desnoyers explains. Luckily even make-up amateurs can grasp this low-maintenance beauty trend. Apply a luminous primer to smooth out the texture of your skin; follow with a light, glow-enhancing tinted moisturiser to even your tone; finish with a soft highlighter in a neutral or slightly bronzed hue to warm your complexion. Liquid highlighters work well and can even be mixed into your base for a flawless finish.

The road to beauty is beginning to look like a mud run thanks to the rise of mud, clay and charcoal-based products – it’s time to get your hands dirty.
Mud, clay and charcoal are powerful detoxifiers that draw out impurities, absorb excess oil and deliver valuable minerals to repair skin and hair. ‘Activated’ charcoal is the beauty ingredient du jour, explains Clinique education manager Tracey Pedersen. “Charcoal draws toxins to the surface of the skin, helping it to clear more quickly,” she explains. Mud and clay products, on the other hand, replenish lost minerals and increase hydration.

CORAL CRUSH
With a nod to the 70s, coral is the colour trend you need to be wearing come beach or barbecue.
Coral signifies spring; it’s fresh, fun and chirpy. “Coral works well on all skintones and is less of a commitment than bright pink or crisp red lips,” says Auckland-based make-up artist Fiona Wright, who suggests opting for a shade that best suits your skin’s undertone. Think brighter for cool tones and peachier for warm – neutral skintones can go either way. “If the vibrancy of the hue puts you off, opt for a sheer texture on your cheeks and lips,” she adds. Alternatively, dab a coral eyeshadow on the centre of your lids or slick a coat of coral varnish onto your nails for an easy way to inject the colour into your look.

COLOUR POP
It’s the season for bright lips, electric-blue eyes and glitter. So choose a feature and play it up with vivid colour and step out your comfort zone.
The fashion week runways were full of colour and your make-up bag is no exception to this style rule. Pops of bright reds and electric blues are being used to create a dramatic accent. “It’s all about balance and playing up one feature at a time,” says Tony Baumann, head of artistry at Mecca Cosmetica. “Choose one feature to be centre stage and have everything else as the backdrop.” Baumann says it’s all about contrasting textures. “If you’re wearing glossy lips, go matt on the eyes and satin on the skin,” he says. “For metallic, high-shine eyes, reverse it and go for a matt lip and skin.”
