THE 6 NEW BEAUTY TRENDS TO LOOK OUT FOR September 29, 2016 11:59

Summer upon us, and now is the time to update your beauty arsenal

WELL OILED:
Slide these nourishing oils into your daily routine to breathe new life into dry skin, dull hair and a sallow complexion.
If you hink you have your skincare, haircare and make-up regime down pat, you may still be missing a vital step – oils.
For beauty junkies, oils have long been a must-have and now they’re moving into the mainstream. Facial oils are rising in popularity as an essential tool to combat dry skin, signs of ageing, enlarged pores, scarring, and even acne. And the magic doesn’t stop there – cosmetics manufacturers are now incorporating oils into make-up formulas, from primers to
oil-based blushes and lip products. Look for rosy tints that glide on effortlessly and adapt to your skintone.
Try: 1. Chanel Le Lift Restorative Cream Oil, $230. 2. Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil, $66. 3. Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil, $67. 4. Redken Diamond Oil, $45. By Terry Cellularose Cleansing Oil, $97. 6. Bobbi Brown Extra Face Oil, $125.
LIGHT UP

Gone are the days of heavy contouring – it’s time to get ‘non-touring’. Wondering what we’re talking about? Read on…
Dewy, fresh bases with sculpted features reigned supreme on the international catwalks and the word ‘glowing’ was used in every review. The key to this is non-touring – the lightweight version of contouring, as MAC make-up director Lyne Desnoyers explains. Luckily even make-up amateurs can grasp this low-maintenance beauty trend. Apply a luminous primer to smooth out the texture of your skin; follow with a light, glow-enhancing tinted moisturiser to even your tone; finish with a soft highlighter in a neutral or slightly bronzed hue to warm your complexion. Liquid highlighters work well and can even be mixed into your base for a flawless finish.
Try: Tom Ford Illuminating Highlight Pen in Naked Bisque, $86. 2. Arbonne Perfecting Liquid Foundation SPF 15, $70. 3. Smashbox Bronze Lights in Warm Matte, $58. 4. Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder in Bronze Glow, $105.

THE DARK ARTS
The road to beauty is beginning to look like a mud run thanks to the rise of mud, clay and charcoal-based products – it’s time to get your hands dirty.
Mud, clay and charcoal are powerful detoxifiers that draw out impurities, absorb excess oil and deliver valuable minerals to repair skin and hair. ‘Activated’ charcoal is the beauty ingredient du jour, explains Clinique education manager Tracey Pedersen. “Charcoal draws toxins to the surface of the skin, helping it to clear more quickly,” she explains. Mud and clay products, on the other hand, replenish lost minerals and increase hydration.
Try: 1. Davines Naturaltech Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo, $42. 2. Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser, $71. 3. BeeBio Lava White Mud Masque, $149. 4. Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask $44. 5. Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque, $89. 6. The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Body Clay, $45.

CORAL CRUSH
With a nod to the 70s, coral is the colour trend you need to be wearing come beach or barbecue.
Coral signifies spring; it’s fresh, fun and chirpy. “Coral works well on all skintones and is less of a commitment than bright pink or crisp red lips,” says Auckland-based make-up artist Fiona Wright, who suggests opting for a shade that best suits your skin’s undertone. Think brighter for cool tones and peachier for warm – neutral skintones can go either way. “If the vibrancy of the hue puts you off, opt for a sheer texture on your cheeks and lips,” she adds. Alternatively, dab a coral eyeshadow on the centre of your lids or slick a coat of coral varnish onto your nails for an easy way to inject the colour into your look.
Try: 1. Nars Orgasm Illuminator $47. 2. Curtis Collection Lip Velvet in Berry Cocktail, $50. 3. Osmosis Colour Blush in Crushed Coral, $68. 4. Osmosis Colour Lip Glaze in Sweet, $52. 5. Karen Murrell Lipstick in #08 Coral Dawn, $30.

COLOUR POP
It’s the season for bright lips, electric-blue eyes  and glitter. So choose a feature and play it up with vivid colour and step out your comfort zone.
The fashion week runways were full of colour and your make-up bag is no exception to this style rule. Pops of bright reds and electric blues are being used to create a dramatic accent. “It’s all about balance and playing up one feature at a time,” says Tony Baumann, head of artistry at Mecca Cosmetica. “Choose one feature to be centre stage and have everything else as the backdrop.” Baumann says it’s all about contrasting textures. “If you’re wearing glossy lips, go matt on the eyes and satin on the skin,” he says. “For metallic, high-shine eyes, reverse it and go for a matt lip and skin.”
Try: 1. Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer in Lip Service, $20. 2. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Bold Liquid Lipstick in Extreme Pink, $39. 3. Bobbi Brown Blush in 9 Pale Pink, $60. 4. Mellow Ultra Matte Lipstick in Electro, $18. 5. L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Doutzen’s Delicate Rose, $24. 6. Clinique Lid Pop in 11 Surf Pop, $42

SKINSPIRATION
Trends come and go, but great skin never goes out of style. Here’s a cheat’s guide to getting a lit-from-within glow.
We know gorgeous, glowing skin is the result of a good skincare routine, and Auckland-based make-up artist Paige Best agrees that “make-up will only be as good as the skin underneath it”. So if cleansing, scrubbing and buffing just isn’t hitting the mark, maybe it’s time to address evening out your skintone and incorporating products that brighten your complexion, too. From serums, day creams and essences, to make-up that fakes a luminous glow, it’s about time you saw the light and updated your brightening arsenal with these must-haves.
